Enlightening Minds ♦ Enriching Hearts ♦ Inspiring Future Leaders
A dream of Father Charles. Kennedy and the members of Sacred Heart Parish materialized on February
13, 1949, when the ground was broken for the new parochial school and convent. The school was
completed during the summer of 1949 and opened for classes in September of that year with an
enrollment of 112 students. His Eminence, James Francis Cardinal McIntyre, Archbishop of Los Angeles,
dedicated the new buildings on October 9, 1949. Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary were the first
community to staff the school and continued through June 1968. In September 1968 the Sisters of the
Holy Cross took charge of running the school. From the beginning, there have always been some lay
teachers on the staff. Since September 1974 Sacred Heart School has had a lay principal. Since
September 1979, the school has been staffed completely by lay personnel. Today 25 dedicated lay
personnel staff the school. Sacred Heart School opened a kindergarten class in 1979 and transitional
kindergarten class in 2014. Transitional kindergarten bridges the path between preschool and
kindergarten and gives students a head start that will yield huge payoffs in future academic success. It
provides the gift of time that will help students build a strong foundation for success in elementary
school. Sacred Heart School is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges
(WASC). The school is a member of the Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA), National
Catholic Education Association, and the Antelope Valley Christian Athletic League.
In 1985 the school added a computer lab with a full-time computer, IT, and now a coding/STEM teacher.
In addition to a full academic curriculum, the school offers Spanish, music classes, computer, yearbook,
physical education classes, after-school sports, cheerleading, vocal, band, and hand bell choirs. The
school also supports an Academic Decathlon Team and Mathlete Teams at the Junior High level. The
school participates in and has been successful at many local essays and art contests such as the NASA
Math and Space Odyssey, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Astronomy Club, Cherish the Child,
Holy Cross Family Ministries, Los Angeles Vocations Art Competition, The Reader’s Digest National
Word Power Spelling Bee Challenge, and the National Geographic Geography Bee. Currently, Sacred
Heart School has one class for each grade TK – 8th. Each class has a total of 20-28 students to support
them with 25 faculty and staff members along with a wonderful supportive PTO. To help assist its
teachers in providing exceptional learning environments, facilitate differentiated instruction, and
prepare students to successfully meet the challenges of excelling in the 21st-century workplace, the
classrooms are all equipped with interactive marker boards along with their 1:1 IPad tablet program.
With the addition of the American Heroes Park in 2013 and the new church in 2024, the school campus
has expanded approximately three blocks east to west and one block north to south. We now have
some of the best outdoor sports playing fields in our AVCAL private school league, not to mention how it
has benefited our PE and other school wide programs. We were very excited to help host the LA Rams
fun athletic camp for our students. The city of Lancaster renovation of its downtown area has really
enhanced the area around the school campus. Having the Lancaster Performing Arts Center a couple
blocks away allows the school to walk and attend several Fine Arts performances a year. The 2024-2025
school year is Sacred Heart School 75 th anniversary. The school continues to grow and lead in many
areas spiritually, academically, socially, and emotionally. Our students graduate being very prepared
going into high school. We are always made aware of this from our feeder high school Paraclete High
School. Many of our graduates are in the top five and ten percent of their incoming freshman class.
